The identification of the 12 basic food commodities is based on their strategic importance to ensure long-term food security, in addition to being the most important staple foods in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and many other regions.
Wheat
General Information
It is one of the oldest and most important cereal crops and it is considered a staple food around the world. SALIC is working to meet the growing need in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the expansion of supply chains in the field of grains.

Barley
General Information
One of the staple grains grown in temperate climates globally, barley is of prime importance to food security as a strategic commodity for animal feed. In Ukraine, SALIC manages more than 200,000 hectares of farmland that produce more than one million tons of wheat, barley, corn, and soybeans.

Rice
General Information
It is one of the most consumed foods by the largest part of the world’s population, especially in Asia and Africa. It is the agricultural commodity, which has the third highest production in the world after sugar cane and maize. Since large parts of the sugarcane and maize crops are used for other purposes than human consumption, rice is the most important food crop to human nutrition.

Corn
General Information
Corn has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with total production exceeding that of wheat or rice. Several varieties of corn are used for animal feed.

Soybean
General Information
Soy is classified as an oilseed and has been used in China for 5,000 years as food and to manufacture medicines. Soybeans are important food and an industrial crop on a global level. It is different from the rest of the other types because it contains all eight essential amino acids necessary for the human body to make protein. This makes it an excellent source of protein and SALIC invests in soybeans through its farms in Ukraine and Canada.

Fodder
General Information
Crops grown mainly for animal feed, that is, agricultural nutritional food used specifically to feed domesticated livestock.

Red Meat
General Information
SALIC is working to ensure the arrival of the necessary commodity supplies to the Kingdom and to work in more than one direction to ensure smooth work, supply, and abundance. In the field of animal production, SALIC acquired 25% of Minerva Foods, a Brazilian company that is one of the largest companies in the production of meat in South America and the third largest exporter of meat in Brazil, producing more than one million tons of meat. SALIC also expanded in the Southern Hemisphere by acquiring Australian assets and operating 211,000 hectares of land and 40,000 Merino sheep.

Poultry
General Information
Two of the most important elements of dietary protein, poultry and eggs, are among the basic commodities in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which SALIC cares about and works to achieve self-sufficiency. During covid-19 SALIC worked, under the difficult circumstances that the world went through, to cover the entire demand for eggs and stabilize their prices in the local market.

Aquaculture

The importance of richness in fish is a key element in diversifying the sources of animal protein for consumers. The National Transformation Program has set clear goals to enhance economic growth, food security, and economic diversification.

Edible Oil
General Information
Oils and fats of all kinds are of great economic importance as these products are considered one of the pillars of food security and an important part of one’s diet. They are essential food with large consumption and are integrated with other food industries such as the production of feed and poultry meat. It has direct and indirect interrelationships with a number of economic sectors, including: manufacturing industries, the soap industry, pharmaceutical industries, plastic industries, and the chemical industry.

The increasing demand for sugar has led to its emergence as one of the most essential elements in the Kingdom, which works to meet the need for the commodity and to ensure the stability of its prices locally and protect it from global price fluctuations or shortages.

General Information
Milk and its derivatives appear as a strategic commodity for all countries of the world due to the steady growth in demand and the occasional shortage that plays a fundamental role in price instability or not having enough availability of these basic commodities in human life.
